Benin: 64th session of African health ministers put off due to Ebola outbreak

Cotonou, Benin (PANA) – Due to the Ebola virus disease outbreak in parts of West Africa, the 64th ministerial session of the World Health Organisation (WHO) regional committee for Africa, initially planned for 1-5 September in Cotonou, Benin, has been postponed until November, Beninese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nassirou Arifari Bako, said here Thursday.

"With that decision, Benin will express its full solidarity with countries hit by the deadly Ebola disease and show compassion to hundreds of mourning families across the world and particularly the West African sub-region," said Arifari Bako at a press briefing.

Reaffirming the country's determination to host that important international meeting by taking all measures to ensure its success, he said the Beninese government has expressed regrets to the 700 expected participants from 47 countries.

Though not affected by the epidemic, Benin would like to contribute by taking preventive measures within the framework of the global health watch and the caution required in such circumstance.

In a statement early this week, Benin's Minister of Health, Dorothée Kindé Gazard said: “Today, there is no Ebola patient in Benin, but it would be suicidal that Benin rests on its laurels”.

In that respect, Benin has taken a number of preventive measures including training of medical staff on how to contain the disease it it occurred.
