Benin: West African network for anti-tuberculosis programmes to be established

Cotonou, Benin (PANA) - A West African network for anti-tuberculosis programmes is to be established in the sub-region to strengthen national initiatives, PANA reported from here Tuesday.

In an effort to establish the network, the coordinators of anti-tuberculosis programmes from 15 member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Mauritania are currently meeting in Cotonou.

The three-day meeting started on Monday

Despite the efforts made by the international community to help reduce the consequences of tuberculosis on the health of African populations, the disease has continued to put a heavy burden on the health system of the various countries

While African countries have adopted national programmes to fight the disease, little effort has been made to pool resources and prevent cross border infections.

Because of the disparity in the effectiveness of the national anti-tuberculosis programmes, several patients leave their countries in search of better anti-tuberculosis care, hence the need to hold consultations among coordinators of the national programmes.
