Belgium: IOF condemns violence in Central African Republic

Brussels, Belgique (PANA) - International Organization of the Francophonie Secretary General, Mrs Michaëlle Jean has strongly condemned the continuing violence which in the past few days  caused several deaths in Bangui, capital of Central African Republic.

In a statement obtained Wednesday by PANA in Brussels, the IOF described such acts as "unacceptable" in view of preparations for election that is expected to end the crisis in CAR.

"On my own behalf and in the name of the francophone community, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the victims' families and all people in CAR," Mrs Jean said.

"It is intolerable to target humanitarian organisations which are based in the country to provide relief to the needy populations who suffer from the crisis," she stressed.

Calling on all parties to exercise restraint in favour of dialogue and reaching consensus, Mrs Jean said that those responsible for the violence must be identified and taken to court.

In that respect, she underlined the commitment of the Francophonie Organisation to fight impunity, in particular through establishment of a special criminal court in CAR.
