Belgium: EU to give 25m euro yearly for vaccination campaign in poor countries

Brussels, Belgium (PANA) - The European Union is to give 25 million euros yearly between 2014 and 2020 to finance vaccination campaigns in poor countries.

European Commission chairman Manuel Durao Barroso announced the grant in Brussels, Belgium, Tuesday at a meeting by the Commission and the GAVI Alliance to raise funds for vaccinations campaigns.

Hitherto, the EU gave 10 million euros yearly for vaccination programmes in poor countries.

The GAVI Alliance is a public-private global health partnership committed to increasing access to immunisation in poor countries.

It brings together developing country and donor governments, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank, the vaccine industry in both industrialised and developing countries, research and technical agencies, civil society, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other private philanthropists.

Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome, who is currently on a working visit to the Belgian capital, took part in the meeting.
