Band to celebrate Mandela's centenary

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Five-time Grammy-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo will honour former world statesman Nelson Mandela with three concerts at the State Theatre in Pretoria this weekend.

The band travelled with him to Oslo, Norway, when he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and, the following year, sang at his inauguration as South Africa’s first democratically elected leader.

Mandela famously described the group as “cultural ambassadors to the world”.

The band will use the concerts to celebrate Mandela’s centenary which will be marked on July 13.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo, formed by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, rose to worldwide prominence as a result of singing with Paul Simon on his 1986 album Graceland, and has won multiple awards.
