Bacai Sanha, Kumba Yala to contest Guinea-Bissau’s presidential run-off

Bissau- Guinea-Bissau (PANA) -- Malam Bacai Sanha, candidate of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) and Kumba Yala,candi date of the of the Social Renovation Party (PRS) will contest the second round o f the presidential election in Guinea-Bissau, according to the National Commissio n of Elections (CNE).
The CNE said on Thursday that Sanha obtained 39.
59% of the votes, while Yala got 29.
42% during the 28 June presidential election.
The date for the run-off is ye t to be announced.
The third candidate, Henrique Rosa, got about 24.
19% of the votes.
The contest between Bacai Sanha and Kumba Yala will be a repeat of the 2000 elec tion in which Kumba Yala won with 72% of the votes.
During the last presidential election of 2005, Malam Bacai Sanha reached the sec ond round but lost to Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, who was assassinated by milit a ry officers in his residence in Bissau last March.
