At least seven dead in mining convoy attack in eastern Burkina Faso

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - At least seven people were killed  on Friday in an attack on a mining convoy in the province of Tapoa in eastern Burkina Faso, local security sources have said.

The logistics convoy of the Boungou industrial gold mine operated by Canadian company, Sefamo, was parked in the Nadiabondi area when it was attacked by unidentified gunmen.

"Seven people, all truck drivers, were killed," a police source told PANA. The authorities have not yet communicated on this attack.

This mine was the victim of a similar attack at the end of 2019 in an ambush that cost the lives of 37 mine workers.

As of 31 December 2020, there were 17 industrial mines in operation and over 500 valid mining titles and authorisations in Burkina Faso. The mining sector contributed 12.07% of GDP in 2020.

However, since 2015, the country's security situation has deteriorated, forcing some mines to close.
