Arab League welcomes Egypt's role in Hamas-Israel prisoners' swap

Cairo, Egypt (PANA) - The Cairo-based Arab League on Wednesday welcomed the Egypt-brokered prisoner exchange deal between Palestinian movement Hamas and Israel.

The Arab League congratulated the Palestinian prisoners and hailed Egypt’s role in the success of the deal.

The League said it would continue to demand the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons, vowing to take this cause to all international and regional events.

The League secretariat said the prisoner swap was important because it included the release of more than a thousand Palestinian prisoners (1,027),  in return for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit who has been held by Hamas since the Lebanon war in 2006.

Hamas and Israel have both thanked Cairo for its role in brokering the deal, which was also described as historic by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
