Anti-slavery activists remanded in custody in Mauritania

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) – Six anti-slavery activists in Mauritania have been remanded in custody by a tribunal for their alleged role on an attack on a police station at a suburb of Nouakchott on 13 December in which several policemen were injured.

Judicial sources told PANA on Monday that they include Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid, a human rights activist and chairman of the Movement Against Slavery, Racism and Exclusion in Mauritania.

They were remanded in custody by an examining magistrate from the tribunal of Nouakchott on Sunday evening.

The movement has rejected the allegations and denounced the actions of the authorities to silence all those who denounce slavery.

Amnesty International has demanded the release of Ould Dah and his supporters.
