Lisbon- Portugal (PANA) -- Some 254,471 new HIV/AIDS cases were recorded in Angola in 2009, according to the country's HIV/AIDS Czar.
Director of Angola's National Institute for the Fight against HIV/AIDS, Dulcelina Serrمo, announced the figures while speaking at the ongoing 3rd Congress of the Portuguese-Speaking Countries Community here.
Serrمo said the age group most affected was from 15-49 years, with 209,667 people living with HIV.
According to the public health physician, although Angola shares borders with two countries that have high HIV prevalence (Namibia 20 per cent and Zambia 17 percent), the spread of the epidemic in Angola has been relatively limited.
