African qualifiers for 2018 WC: Uganda, Zambia reach group phase

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - Uganda and Zambia have joined Gabon in the third and final phase of the African qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, PANA reported from here Sunday.

Uganda advanced to the group phase on a 4-0 aggregate after beating visiting Togo 3-0 on Sunday.

For its part, Zambia beat visiting Sudan 2-0 on Sunday to progress 3-0 on aggregate.

Earlier on Saturday, Gabon became the first team to reach the group phase after beating Mozambique on penalties. Both teams were deadlocked 1-1 on aggregate.

The 20 aggregate winners from the two-leg second round will reach the group stage, where they will be divided into five groups of four teams each.

The five group winners will qualify to represent Africa at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
