AUC extends condolences following death of Mazimhaka

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The African Union Commission has been saddened by the death of its former Deputy Chairperson Patrick Mazimhaka, who passed away on the 25 January 2018, according to a statement issued on Friday.

Expressing “the great loss of a distinguished leader, a true son of Africa and a Pan-Africanist,” the Commission said that “Mazimhaka will be long remembered for the role he played in the evolution and major transformation of our continental body, from the Organisation of African Unity to the African Union.”

Mazimhaka was Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission from 2003 to 2008, when he served under former Malian President Alpha Oumar Konaré, the then Chairperson of the Commission.

He also played a key role in the efforts towards the restoration of peace in Somaliland.

The Commission has extended its “heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Mazimhaka and his children, his bereaved family and friends, as well as the Government and people of the Republic of Rwanda,” the statement added.
