AU wants to set up World Environment Organisation

Malabo, Equatorial Guinea (PANA) - Member states of the African Union (AU) will propose to the UN Conference on sustainable development (Rio+20) the creation of a World Environment Organisation at an international meeting on the environment taking place from 28 May to 6 June, 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The establishment of the Organisation, to be based in Nairobi, Kenya, is aimed at enabling Africa to tackle issues related to environmental policies and sustainable development, according to the Angolan News Agency (ANGOP).

This indication was given to the press Friday by the Angolan Environment Deputy
Minister, Syanga Abílio, on the sidelines of the 17th AU summit of Heads of State and Government in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

Abilio said that the African countries should lay out strategies and adopt common positions
for challenges of the green economy and the need for the creation of an institutional framework.

The theme of the current AU summit is “Accelerate the Youth’s Skill for Sustainable Development”.
