AU to hold conference for national reconciliation in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) in Libya, Mrs. Wahida Ayari, has said that the AU High-Level Committee on Libya intends to hold an inclusive conference for national reconciliation with Libyans themselves determining the agenda.

Mrs. Ayari said this in an interview published on Sunday by the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat published in London and reported by the Libyan newspaper Al-Wasat.

She said that the conference would be "a complementary path" if the current path fails, explaining that the AU would focus on national reconciliation and support for the existing political path adopted by the international community in Berlin 1.

The Congolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Claude Gakosso, whose country holds the chairmanship of the AU High-Level Committee on Libya, recently visited the country at the head of an AU delegation to present the AU's national reconciliation plan.

In response to a question on the divergence of African and Western roles in Libya, the AU official refrained from presenting the situation as a case of competition between the AU and major Western countries.

"Libya is not a racetrack for each group to propose an initiative, and there is no competition on who will be able to resolve the conflict," Mrs. Ayari said.

She stressed that African and European countries bordering Libya are affected by what is happening in terms of the presence of mercenaries, weapons, and illegal immigration.
