AU suspends Guinea following ousting of President Condé

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The African Union (AU) has suspended Guinea from all its activities and decision-making bodies following Sunday's military coup that overthrew President Alpha Condé and his government.

A tweet by the AU Political Affairs Peace and Security Council said this is in accordance with the relevant AU instruments.

The AU called on the UN Security Council to endorse the final communique of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) which has also been endorsed by AU Peace and Security Council.

The tweet called on the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat, to engage with the stakeholders in the Region.

ECOWAS leaders, at a virtual extraordinary summit on Wednesday suspended Guinea from all decision-making bodies of the sub-regional group with immediate effect following the coup.

They said the suspension will remain in force until further notice.

The heads of state also agreed to immediately dispatch a high-level mission to Guinea to meet with the military leaders calling themselves National Committee for Reconciliation and Development (CNRD).

In a communique, it demanded the immediate and unconditional release of former Condé, 83. and asked the military leaders to ensure his physical safety.
