AU's plan to hold Global African Diaspora Summit on course

Malabo, Equatorial Guinea (PANA) - The Technical Committee on the holding of the Global African Diaspora Summit, scheduled for South Africa in the second half of 2012, has reported progress in the planning of the summit.

According to details of the planning obtained by PANA here, the Technical Committee has concluded its assignment, and will now forward its decisions to a Ministerial Meeting to review, appraise and approve the outcome of the Technical Meeting to set the stage for the summit.

There are indications that the Ministerial Meeting may be held in September 2011, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, to take advantage of the expected convergence of the ministers there.

African leaders who met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in January 2011 approved the road-map toward the preparations for the summit, which had earlier been postponed from 2007.

They requested the South African government, which will host the summit, and the African Union Commission, to collaborate in order to implement the road-map and facilitate the preparations for the summit.
