AU congratulates Sierra Leone for peaceful, credible General Elections

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat on Thursday congratulated the people of Sierra Leone for peaceful, transparent and credible General Elections they held on 7 March 2018.

In a press statement issued by the Commission, the Chairperson took note of the peaceful atmosphere within which the elections took place and he applauded the efforts of all electoral stakeholders including political parties and the National Electoral Commission.

Sierra Leone’s presidential election, however, remains inconclusive. In line with the Constitution and the country’s electoral laws, a second round will be held between the two leading candidates.

In view of this, the Chairperson has appealled to all electoral stakeholders, particularly the candidates of Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and All People’s Congress (APC) to maintain peace and do all they can to ensure the successful completion of the electoral process.

“The African Union remains committed to supporting the consolidation of democracy in Sierra Leone and in all its other member states through peaceful, transparent and credible electoral processes,” the statement concluded.

Julius Maada Bio of SLPP and Dr Samura Kamara of the ruling APC are contesting the presidential run-off vote on 27 March having emerged front-runners in the fiercely contested 7 March elections.
