AU completes installation of internet exchange connection in 33 countries

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) – The African Union Commission (AU) has completed the landmark rollout of an internet exchange in 33 African countries, helping carriers of internet traffic to save US$65 million annually payable to European and American data carriers to connect internet users, an AU expert has said.

Moctar Yedaly, Head of Information Society Division at the AUC, told PANA on the Internet Service Providers (ISP) operating in Africa have been the biggest beneficiaries of the installation of the Internet Service Exchange, which has formally been launched in 18 African countries so far.

“This was our business plan. To reduce the amount of money that our internet service providers have been paying for third party connections in London and elsewhere,” the AU Information Society Division official said in an interview on the sidelines of an expert meeting attended by experts from 29 countries.

The AU has installed the Internet Exchange in 33 countries and 18 countries have already launched their operations, which mean internet traffic is routed internally through a routing scheme, Yedaly said.

The AU is holding its Second Specialised Technical Committee on Communication and ICT session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss policy regulations and initiatives required to propel the growth of the ICT sector in Africa, one of the main drivers of economic growth and job creation for the youth in Africa.

The technical experts’ session, which kicked off on 20 November, would be followed by a Ministerial session starting on 23 November, to discuss and approve policy issues concerning internet governance.

The Technical Committee, which works with the AUC on providing informed inputs on their areas of specialization before the policies are forwarded to the Executive Council of the AU for approval, are accredited with accelerating the pace of economic integration through the implementation of projects.
