AU calls for end to air raids on Darfur

Addis Ababa- Ethiopia (PANA) -- African Union (AU) Commission chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare called Thursday for an immediate end to bombing raids being carried out on the restive Sudanese region of Darfur by government forces.
"We have called for an immediate stop to these bombings, the latest of which struck an area close to the capital (of Darfur) El Fasher," Konare declared at a news conference marking the close of the 3rd ordinary summit of the AU.
He deplored the fact that the AU mission in charge of observing the cease-fire in Darfur had not been able to deploy afield, noting nonetheless that the Sudanese government had promised to arrange for the mission to work smoothly.
Concerning negotiations expected to open on 15 July in Addis Ababa between Khartoum and the two rebel movements in Darfur, Konare expressed fears that government air raids and attacks by the pro-government Janjaweed militias could undermine the initiative.
