AU Commission chief meets with Mauritanian President Abdel Aziz

Nouakchott, Mauritania (PANA) - Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz on Tuesday met with African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat at the presidential palace in Nouakchott, the Mauritanian news agency (AMP) reported.

Mr. Mahamat is in Nouakchott for a strategic consultative meeting on G5 Sahel which is due to start on Wednesday.

According to AMP, President Abdel Aziz and Mr. Mahamat discussed issues related to engagement of the AU in the G5 Sahel framework for coordination of regional cooperation in development policies and security matters in West Africa.

Member countries of G5 Sahel are Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.

The Chairperson explained the importance of the forthcoming consultation noting that the AU outlined a strategic plan for the Sahel in 2014 and that the strategy was a continuation of other supportive plans set in collaboration with multilateral partners.

The 10-day conference in the Mauritanian capital will work out "a coherent and realistic movement order, taking into consideration the experience of the other participants to reach the common objective," Mr. Mahamat added.

Meanwhile, Nouakchott is bracing itself to host the next AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government in July 2018.
