AU Commission, CAF get AU mandate on World Cup 2010

Addis Ababa- Ethiopia (PANA) -- The African Union Summit, which has been meeting here since 6 July, closed its session Thursday with a decision mandating the African Union (AU) Commission to collaborate with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in working with FIFA and host South Africa to develop programmes to stage a successful World Cup in 2010.
South Africa, a member of the AU, successfully put a bid for the 2010 edition against other African countries Morocco, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia.
While recognising the spirit of solidarity demonstrated by the contending African countries to secure the World Cup for the African continent, the AU, whose current chair is Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, congratulated South Africa on its successful bid to host the event, which comes to Africa for the first time.
The assembly of the heads of state and governments also hailed the decision by FIFA to award the World Cup to Africa, recognising that this was a momentous occasion for the continent and its people.
