APF 9th regional assembly afoot in Niger

Niamey- Niger (PANA) -- The 9th regional confab of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly (APF), Africa Zone, is underway in Niamey with focus on culture and HIV/AIDS.
The session is discussing parliamentary networking on HIV/AIDS control in Africa, said Cameroonian-born Nicolas Amougou Noma, who is current Speaker of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly.
Amougou Noma said the main objective of the regional assembly is to discuss all issues specific to the region and harmonise positions on issues of concern.
At the opening of the session Wednesday, the Speaker of the Niger National Assembly Mahamane Ousmane extolled the APF for "promoting democratic values and defending human rights.
" Ousmane recalled that two years ago a disruption of the democratisation process in Niger attracted its suspension from the APF, and that the injunction was eventually at the Yaounde meeting.
The Niamey meeting, running right through Sunday, is holding ahead of the ordinary session of Francophonie slated for July 2001 in Quebec, Canada.
