ANC slams Mandela death rumours

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) - South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) has slammed those behind the rumours that former President Nelson Mandela, 92, has died.

ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu described as people "without a soul" those behind the claims, which spread around the world over the weekend.

The  Nelson Mandela Foundation said the world statesman was well and on holiday with his wife Graça Machel in Cape Town.

"The ANC strongly condemns individuals or groupings behind such a hoax, which is meant to create an atmosphere of panic and anxiety in the country," Mthembu said.

He said the weekend hoax on a social network, Twitter, was not only "malicious but insensitive" to the Mandela family and the South African nation.

"It also goes against the African culture and tradition to claim that a living person is dead," Mthembu said, calling on Twitter to investigate and find a way of stamping out the public misuse of their social network.

Mandela retired from public life several years ago and is rarely seen in public.
