93 women among 3,600 detained in Abidjan prisons

Abidjan- Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) -- There are some 93 women including 13 teenagers among 3,600 prisoners currently detained in the Abidjan Prison, the ruling Ivorian Popular Front-run newspaper, Notre Voie reported Wednesday.
It said the 93 female detainees are divided into two groups because of the lack of sufficient cells.
It said smokers occupy one cell while non-smokers are in the other, contrary to the classification procedure whereby inmates are grouped in accordance with the offences committed.
The 93 women are serving sentences for "stealing, assault and battery and selling prohibited pharmaceutical products," the paper explained.
