5,124 Mauritians live with HIV, says Health Minister

Port Louis, Mauritius (PANA) - About 5,124 people live with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Mauritius as at October this year, the Mauritian Minister of Health, Lormus Bundhoo, indicated Thursday in Port Louis, the capital.

According to the minister, 4,119 of the figure are men.

Speaking on the occasion of the celebration of the World AIDS Day, Bundhoo stressed the need to strengthen measures to fight the pandemic.

"Screening is essential. If people do not come to us, we will go to them," he said, disclosing that health officials were touring the country with a view to carrying out voluntary screening.

According to PILS, an NGO fighting against HIV, Mauritius has the highest prevalence rate of AIDS in the Indian Ocean.

Mauritius is a mountainous island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar.
