44 Nigeriens killed in Ivorian crisis, says President Issoufou

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - No fewer than 44 Nigeriens were killed during the post-election crisis in Côte d'Ivoire, President Mahamadou Issoufou said on his return from the inauguration of his Ivorian counterpart, Alassane Ouattara, on Saturday in Yamoussoukro, the political capital of the country.

Issoufou said the Ivorian post-election crisis victims were estimated at nearly 3,000 dead, including 44 Niger nationals, living in Côte d'Ivoire, adding that five other Nigeriens were still missing.

According to Issoufou, the Ivorian crisis has "proved to us that democracy and peace are valuable assets that must be preserved and maintained.

"The situation in Côte d'Ivoire reinforced my conviction that we must always unite, we must always seek to reconcile because our countries are very fragile."
