40 injured in clashes between pro-govt militia, opposition activists in Togo

Lome, Togo (PANA) – Many people were injured Saturday in Lome in an opposition rally that resulted in clashes between a pro-government militia and opposition activists, PANA reported.

The organisers of the event, the Collective “Save Togo”, had chosen the district of Doumasséssé, known to be the stronghold of the ruling party, as the departure point for the rally.

But they were denied access by pro-government supporters who were armed with clubs, machetes, knives, pickaxes and other weapons.

A fierce fight soon erupted between the -pro-government militia and the opposition activists, lasting for several hours before the security forces - who were apparently overwhelmed by the event - used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The Collective "Save Togo" has condemned the violence and slammed security forces for their poor handling of the clashes, which they blame on pro-government activists.
