38,000 Mauritanian children suffer malnutrition

Nouakchott- Mauritania (PANA) -- More than 38,000 Mauritanian children are suffering from malnutrition, the official news agency, MAP, reported Tuesday, quoting the Secretary General of the Health and Social Affairs ministry, Mohamed Ould Ely Telmoudy.
Telmoudy spoke Monday at the opening of a weeklong workshop on "Combating acute malnutrition in Mauritania," organised by the Health Ministry with the support of UNICEF and WHO.
The meeting is expected to boost national programmes against malnutrition, a major cause of deaths among children in the Sahel.
"Recent studies have shown that 50% of child deaths, or 300,000 annual deaths are blamed on malnutrition," Souleymane Diallo, the UNICEF representative in Mauritania, told the meeting.
