280 children die from malnutrition in central Mozambique

Maputo- Mozambique (PANA) -- At least 289 have died this year from malnutrition in the central Mozambican province of Sofala, national news agency, AIM reported Tuesday.
The deaths were from the 1,408 children diagnosed with the condition in the first nine months of the year.
The figures, unveiled at a meeting of the Provincial Health Consultative Council in Beira, represent a 29 percent increase over the same period in 2004, when 182 deaths were recorded from 1,092 cases.
Health authorities blame worsening malnutrition on the drought that has hit much of southern and central Mozambique.
