2023 FIFA U-17 WC: Argentina sweep aside Poland to top group

Jakarta, Indonesia (PANA) - Argentina delivered a dominant performance to beat Poland 4-0 and secure top spot in Group D.

Three teams -- Argentina, Japan and Senegal -- ended the group stage with 6 points each. But Argentina topped the group with a goal difference of 5 while Senegal had 2 and Japan 1. Poland ended the tournament losing all three matches.

Claudio Echeverri, who had already drawn gasps from the crowd with some fabulous pieces of skill, came close to scoring the opener for Argentina when he volleyed just wide after being teed up by the lively Ian Subiabre.

When the breakthrough came on 35 minutes, it was a scrappy affair, with Thiago Laplace bundling in from close range after Poland failed to clear a corner, FIFA.com reported.

Argentina extended their advantage straight from kick-off in the second half, with Agustin Ruberto racing through on goal and finishing into the bottom corner.

It was 3-0 soon after, with Subiabre rifling home a powerful effort after a cross was parried into his path by Poland goalkeeper Michal Matys.

Argentina continued to push for more goals and Franco Mastantuono fired against the post before fellow substitute Santiago Lopez rounded off the scoring with a clinical low drive.
