2021 AFCON: Draw pits hosts Cameroon against Burkina Faso in opening match

Yaoundé, Cameroon (PANA) - The following is the result of the draw, held on Tuesday in Yaounde, for the delayed TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Cameroon 2021, which will take place from 9 January to 6 February 2022.

The opening match will be between hosts and five-time Africa Cup of Nations winners Cameroon and Burkina Faso, runners-up of 2013, which are drawn in Group A.

African giants Egypt will face Nigeria in Group B while African champions Algeria are in the same group with Côte d'Ivoire.

Morocco are in Group C with Ghana. Tunisia and Mali will battle it out in Group F while Senegal are drawn in Group B with Zimbabwe.

Group A : Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Cape Verde

Group B : Senegal, Zimbabwe, Guinee, Malawi

Group C : Morocco, Ghana, Comoros, Gabon

Group D : Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Guinea-Bissau

Group E : Algeria, Sierra-Leone, Equatorial Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire

Group F : Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania, Gambia

The 2021 AFCON was postponed two times due to raining weather concerns and COVID-19.

The draw was attended by CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe,  the Minister of Sports of Cameroon, Prof. Narcisse Mouelle Kombi as well former African football stars Cameroonians Roger Milla and Samuel Eto'o, Ivorian Didier Drogba and Senegalese El Hadji Diouf.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) website said five main cities were selected as hosts of the tournament: Douala and its Japoma Stadium; Yaoundé and its Ahmadou Ahidjo and Olembé Stadiums; Bafoussam and its Kouekong Stadium; Garoua and its Roumdé-Adjia Stadium and the Limbe-Buea and its the Limbe Omnisport Stadium.

The schedule of matches will be as follows:

Group stage: 9-20 January, 2022

Round of 16: 23-26 January, 2022

Quarter-finals: 29-30 January, 2022

Semi-finals: 2-3 February, 2022

Third place match and final: 6 February, 2022
