2019 CAF U-17 men's AFCON: Nigeria hammer Cote d'Ivoire 5-1, raise qualification hope

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - Nigeria on Thursday powered past Cote d'Ivoire, scoring 5 goals and conceded just one in a Group B match in the West Zone B qualifiers for the 2019 CAF Under-17 men's football championship, which will take place in Tanzania.

The victory raises hopes in the Nigerian camp of a qualification slot in the semi-finals. It also takes Nigeria from the bottom of the table to the first position on three points.

However, the final group qualifier between Cote d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso on Sunday can still alter the settings. If the Ivorians beat the Burkinabes, all three teams (Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire) in the group will have three points each and the two qualifiers will be decided by the number of goals they have scored.

Nigeria are on top with 7 goals, conceded 4 for a goal difference of +3, while Burkina Faso have scored 3 goals and conceded 2 for a goal difference of +1. The Ivorians have scored just one goal, conceded 5 for a -4 goal difference.

In Group A, hosts Niger have played their 2 matches, drawn both for 2 points. Ghana and Togo, both on 1 point each, will play on Saturday to determine the group winner and runners-up, the two that will advance to the semi-finals.
