2019 CAF U-17 men's AFCON: Burkina Faso thump Nigeria 3-2 in Group B qualifiers

Niamey, Niger (PANA) - Burkina Faso on Monday defeated Nigeria 3-2 in the opening Group B match in the West Zone B qualifiers for the  2019 CAF Under-17 men's football championship, which will take place in Tanzania.

The other Group B, Day 1 match between Cote d'Ivoire and Benin was cancelled following the disqualification of Benin after it was discovered that 10 of their players failed the MRI test prior to the tournament.

This leaves Group B with three teams - Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Cote d'Ivoire - to contest for the semi-final slot.

Group A also has three teams - hosts Niger, Togo and Ghana. In their opening match on Sunday, Niger drew 0-0 with Togo.

The tournament continues with matches on 5 September (Niger vs Ghana in Group A) and 6 September (Nigeria vs Cote d'Ivoire in Group B).

The group campaign will run from 2-9 September, 2018, and the knockout phase will be from 12–15 September, 2018.

Only one team, winners of the zonal qualifiers, will represent the zone in Tanzania next year.

The zonal or regional qualifiers will determine the seven teams to join hosts Tanzania for next year’s final tournament

Already the following teams have qualified for Tanzania 2019:
1. Tanzania (hosts) - for Central-East Zone
2. Uganda - also for Central-East Zone
3. Morocco - Northern Zone
4. Cameroon - Central Zone
5. Angola - Southern Zone
