2018 tourist arrivals in Mauritius forecast to hit 1.41 million

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) – Statistics Mauritius, a Mauritian governmental body, said on Tuesday that tourist arrivals are forecast of 1.41 million in 2018.

This represents an increase of 5.1 per cent over the 2017 figure of 1,341,860.

It said arrivals in the first quarter of 2018 went up by 5.4 per cent from 450,799 in 2017 to 475,175.  

In the first quarter of 2018, France, which is the island’s top tourist generating country, registered an increase of 3.3 per cent while figures from La Reunion Island decreased by 5 per cent.

But as compared to the first quarter of 2017, tourist arrivals from Netherlands increased by 55.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2018 as a result of direct flights.

Among the emerging markets, arrivals from India, Russian Federation and China decreased by 0.2 per cent, 3 per cent and 17.3 per cent respectively.

As at the end of March 2018, there were 114 licensed hotels of which one was temporarily closed due to renovation works. The total room capacity of these 113 hotels was 13,588 with 29,656 bed places. These hotels employed 30,974 people.

Quoting figures obtained from the Bank of Mauritius, it said forecast of tourism earnings for the year 2018 stood at Mauritian Rs 62.5 billion, which represents an increase of 3.7 per cent as compared to Mauritian Rs 60.3 billion recorded in 2017. (MRs 35.00 = 1 US$).
