2018 FIFA WC: Russia knock out Spain 4-3 in penalty shootout

Moscow, Russia (PANA) - Hosts Russia sailed into the quarter-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup when they eliminated the 2010 champions Spain 4-3 on penalties in their Round of 16 match played at Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, on Sunday.

The match was tied at 1-1 at the end of extra time, Russia levelling from the penalty spot through Artem Dzyuba in the 41st minute after an own goal by Sergei Ignashevich had given Spain a 1-0 lead on 11 minutes.

In the penalty shootout, Spain missed two shots, Koke and Iago Aspas the culprits, while Russia scored from all their four kicks.

Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was the hero of the day, producing two crusial saves.

Fedor Smolov, Sergei Ignashevich, Aleksandr Golovin, Denis Cheryshev scored for Russia while Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos scored for Spain.

Russia, the lowest ranked team by FIFA at the tournament, have proved the bookmakers wrong with a solid team spirit that has carried them on since their 5-0 hammering of Saudi Arabia in the opening match.
