2018 FIFA WC: Russia demolish Saudi Arabia 5-0 in opening match

Moscow, Russia (PANA) - It was a glorious Thursday evening for Russia and their substitutes as the hosts demolished Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup match played at the Luzhniki Stadium Moscow after a fantastic opening ceremony.

Super substitutes Denis Cheryshev scored a brace in 43rd and 90th minutes while Arten Dzyuba found the net in the 71st minute, as Russia celebrated a record 5-0 victory in a FIFA World Cup opening match.

Russia may have had only 39 per cent of possession, but in the end the result showed their hunger for goals, determination and tactical superiority over the Saudis who came into the match apparently to defend and catch the Russians on the break. And for all their possession, the Saudis had no shot on target.

Iury Gazinsky set the ball rolling for the hosts in the 12th minute in their Group A opening match at the packed stadium with a headed goal that was celebrated by the roaring crowd including President Vladimir Putin.

Then Cheryshev scored his first goal after he came on for Alan Dzagoev, who must have pulled a hamstring as he went down with nobody around him. He found space on the left side of the penalty box and lashed a left-footer that gave the Saudi goalkeeper no chance.

Then came a powerful header by Dzyuba that zoomed into the net in the 71st minute just after his introduction.

The Russians were not done yet. Cheryshev struck again in the 90th minute and Aleksandr Golovin's brilliant free in virtually the last kick of the match that sailed into the left corner of the Saudi net put the icing on the cake for the Russians.

Indeed, the result will give other Group A countries - Egypt and Uruguay who are favourites to advance from into the next round - a lot to worry about. And Russians will celebrate deep into the night.
