2018 FIFA WC: Perfect Croatia drag Argentina to the brink with 3-0 stunner

Nizhny Novgorod, Russia (PANA) - A perfect Croatia on Thursday tore favourites Argentina into pieces as they thrashed the South American giants 3-0 in their second Group D match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium to push them to the brink of an unimaginable early exit.

The Croatians, who beat Nigeria 2-0 in the first match, are through to the next stage of the tournament with a perfect 100 per cent while Argentina have only one point from their 1-1 draw against Iceland in the first match.

The Croatians showed no mercy to the star-studded Argentina side led by Lionel Messi as they displaced them in all sectors of the game.

The rout started in the 53rd minute when an expensive mistake by Argentina goalkeeper gave the Croatians their first goal. Willy Caballero tried to pass the ball to a defender but mis-kicked it to Ante Rebic who showed no mercy in slamming the ball into the net.

Then in the 81st minute Luka Modric dummied a defender, found space in the arch of the penalty box and struck a right-footer that zoomed away from the outstretched hand of Caballero into the net.

The Croatians put the icing on the cake in the first minute of four minutes of stoppage time. They sprinted away on the break after an Argentina corner and raced into the penalty box.

Ivan Rakitic delivered a shot that was pushed away by Caballero but Mateo Kovacic patiently pushed the rebound back to Rakitic who took his time before ramming it into an empty net.

Nigeria play Iceland on Friday in the second Group D match.

In the final group matches, Argentina will meet Nigeria while Croatia will lock horns with Iceland.
