2018 FIFA WC: Heartbreak for Morocco as late own goal gives Iran 1-0 victory

Saint Petersburg, Russia (PANA) - Iran on Friday beat Morocco 1-0 in their Group B match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia after an own goal with just one minute of 6 minutes of time added-on left to play broke the hearts of the North Africans.

In a dramatic end to the encounter at St. Petersburs Stadium, which threatened to be temperamental at some points, Morocco conceded a free kick to the right of their penalty box.

Iran's Ehsan Safi floated the ball into the penalty box and substitute Aziz Bouhaddouz's effort to head it to safety rather saw it zoom into his own net.

The result pushes Iran to the top of the table just before the two European giants, Spain and Portugal, who are also in the group, clash later in the evening.

The day thus ended in heartbreaks for two of Africa's five representatives, who each conceded a late goal, to lose their matches.

Earlier in the day, Egypt also fell to a late goal by Uruguay in their Group A match when Jose Gimenez scored to give the South Americans a 1-0 victory.

With Russia hammering Saudi Arabia 5-0 on Thursday, the hosts have 3 points and lead on goal difference from Uruguay. Egypt have no point, same as Saudi Arabia, who are bottom.
