2018 FIFA WC: France overcome Uruguay 2-0 to reach semi-final

Nizhny Novgorod, Russia (PANA) - France sailed into the semi-final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia when they beat Uruguay 2-0 in their quarter-final match played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Friday.

French star Antoine Griezmann had a hand in both goals, delivering an inch-perfect free-kick that was flicked into the net and then finding his somewhat innocuous shot slip through the hands of the Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

France will play the winner of the second quarter-final match tonight between Brazil and Belgium.

When Rodrigo Bentancur fouled Corentin Tolisso in the 40th minute, midway in the Uruguayan half, Griezmann elected to take the free kick. He sent his cross into the penalty box which was met by Raphael Verane whose header flew into the net.

Uruguay reacted almost immediately but French goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris rose to the challenge.

Then disaster struck the Uruguayans in the 61st when a shot by Greiezman was misjudged by the Muslera whose weak effort to parry it over the bar failed and the ball slipped through his hands into the net.

Lloris made some brilliant saves to deny Luis Suarez and his colleagues a goal.
