2018 FIFA WC: Croatia stun England 2-1 after extra time to reach final

Moscow, Russia (PANA) - Croatia on Wednesday stunned England 2-1 after extra time in their semi-final match in the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia to reach the final where they will play France.

The result leaves England looking for another World Cup victory since their only triumph in 1966 and gives the Croats their first ever final.

In their match played at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, England looked like sailing into Sunday's final when they took the lead after only five minutes through a beautiful free kick taken by Kieran Trippier that climbed above the Croatian wall into the net.

Indeed, England played well in the first half and the disappointed Croatian fans even booed their players who looked out of sorts and could hardly make a meaningful move.

However, a transformed Croatia team turned the tables in the second half with Ivan Perisic levelling the scores at 1-1 in the 68th minute. They even nearly scored again a few minutes later but for the post that saved them a disaster.

The match travelled into extra time as neither side could score.

The Croats continued probing and were rewarded in the 109th minute when Mario Mandzukic picked up a brilliant pass to fire the ball into the net from close range.

England will play Belgium on Saturday for the third position.
