2018 FIFA WC: Croatia beat Denmark 3-2 on penalties to reach quarter-finals

Moscow, Russia (PANA) - Croatia reached the quarter-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Sunday when they beat Denmark 3-2 on penalties in their Round of 16 match played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod.

In a high drama of penalty misses with their goalkeepers excelling, Croatia missed two of their kicks while Denmark missed three. Ivan Rakitic scored the crucial goal that sent Croatia through to meet hosts Russia who earlier in the day stunned the 2010 champions Spain 4-3 on penalties after their match ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Croatia had the opportunity to win the match deep into extra time, but captain Luka Modric missed a penalty in the 116th minute.  

Mathias Jorgesen had scored the fastest goal in the tournament when he put Denmark ahead in just one minute, but the Croatians responded well by levelling the scores in the fourth minute through Mario Mandzukic.

Neither team was able to improve on their early performance and the heartbreaking penalties settled the duel.
