2018 FIFA WC: Belgium stun Brazil 2-1 to reach semi-final

Kazan, Russia (PANA) - Belgium stunned Brazil on Friday in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia when they beat the five-time champions and favourites 2-1 in their quarter-final match played at the Kazan Arena.

The Belgians, who exhibited determination and skills, were helped by a excellent performance of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and dose of luck, as they contained the onslaught of the Brazilians and sailed into the semi-final where they will meet France.

The Brazilians fell behind in the 13th minute against the run of play and after a series near misses. A Belgian corner kick brushed the head of Belgian defender Vincent Kompany slightly and then came off off Fernandinho for an own goal.

Brazil was in more trouble after the half-hour mark, as when they continued to surge into the Belgian half in search for the equaliser, the well drilled Belgians struck on the counter with Romelu Lukaku the lead character.

He picked a ball from deep inside the Belgian half, raced through the field and found Kevin De Bruyne whose right footer zoomed into the net in the 32nd minute.

Brazil continued to search for a goal but were not rewarded until the 76th minute when substitute Renato Augusto's header beat  Courtois to reduce the tally to 2-1.

The defeat leaves Brazil still searching for World Cup glory since 2002 in South Korea/Japan.

The Belgian victory over the giants may also signal that their current generation of players is ready to deliver the European nation's first football World Cup.
