2018 FIFA U-20 WWC: Nigeria qualify for quarter finals

Dinan-Léhon, France (PANA) - Nigeria's Under-20 female football team, the Falconets, on Monday drew 1-1 with China in their final Group D match to reach the quarter-finals of the 2018 Under-20 FIFA World Cup in France.

Nigeria qualified on superior goals aggregate, having ended their group campaign on four points, the same as China recorded.

The Falconets had lost 0-1 to Germany and bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Haiti before playing the 1-1 draw with China who desperately needed a victory to qualify.

China beat Haiti 2-1 in their first game but went down 0-2 to Germany before the draw with Nigeria.

Nigeria's qualification was made possible by an own goal from Chinese Dou Jiaxing five minutes into added time (95th minute). China led all the way with their 41st-minute goal from  Zhang Linyan.

This means that Nigeria, runner in the group, qualify for quarter-finals along with Germany. as China and Haiti are eliminated.

For the quarter-finals, Nigeria will take on Spain on Aug 16 at the Stade Guy Piriou in Concarneau. The other African representative, Ghana, were eliminated from Group A.

In Group C, Spain and Japan qualified for the quarter-final - Spain on 7 points and Japan 6. Spain drew 2-2 with the United States and Japan overwhelmed Paraguay 6–0 in final Group campaign.
