2017 FIFA U-20 WC: Zambia, Portugal reach last 16 after final Group C matches

Cheonan, Korea (PANA) - Zambia topped Group C after the final Group C matches at the ongoing 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup tournament taking place in the Republic of Korea despite losing their final match in Cheonan 1-0 to Costa Rica on Saturday.

The African champions had secured the last 16 berth with 6 points from victories in their first two previous matches against Portugal and Iran, but were hoping for another victory.

The brave Zambians conceded the goal in the 15th minute after Jostin Daly struck a rebound when Zambian goalkeeper Mangani Banda saved Daly's penalty kick and he reacted fastest.

The Zambians actually found the net late in the match when Paston Daka struck, but the goal was ruled offside after the referee reviewed the video assistant referee.

Portugal went though as runners-up in the group with 4 points after coming from behind to beat Iran 2-1 in their match in Incheon.

Diogo Goncalves (54th) Xande Silver (86th) scored for Portugal while Reza Shekari scored for Iran in the 4th minute.

Portugal and Costa Rica both ended the group stage on 4 points and FIFA website said Costa Rica are guaranteed as one of the best four finishers to reach the last 16.
