2017 FIFA Confed. Cup: Hosts Russia, New Zealand out as Portugal, Mexico go through to semis

Kazan, Russia (PANA) - Hosts Russia and New Zealand were Saturday bundled out of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, after they lost their final Group A matches.

Mexico defeated Russia 2-1 while Portugal saw off New Zealand in their worst defeat in this tournament 4-0.

To go through Russia had beaten New Zealand 2-0 in an opening Group match but recorded two straight losses - 1-0 to Portugal and the 2-1 loss to Mexico - to get eliminated.

The other qualifier, Portugal, had drawn 2-2 with Mexico, then went on to beat Russia 1-0 and defeated New Zealand  4-0.

Portugal and Mexico therefore progressed to the semi-finals, scheduled for 28 and 29 June respectively.

Portugal and Mexico ended the group campaign on 7 points apiece but Portugal won the group on superior goals advantage.
