2017 FIFA Confed. Cup: Germany 3, Australia 2 in Group B

Sochi, Russia (PANA) - World Champions Germany, who have never appeared in the FIFA Confederation Cup tournament, began their campaign for the 2017 edition on a happy note, beating a hard-fighting Australia 3-2 in Group B in Sochi, Russia.

Against Australia, runners up in 1997 and bronze medallists in 2001, the Germans went ahead in the 5th minute through Lars Stindl. The Australians equalized in the 41st minute through Tom Rogic but the Germans went ahead again three minutes later through a Julian Draxler penalty goal.

An emphatic German side made it 3-1 in the 48th minute, thanks to a goal from Leon Goretzka.

As if they had woken up from their slumber, the Australians attacked ferociously and this paid off in the 56th minute when Tomi Juric scored.

The waves of attacks on both sides did not produce any more goals until the final whistle.
