2017 FIFA Beach Soccer WC: Nigeria out, Senegal loses 1st match but progresses

Nassau, Bahamas (PANA) - Nigeria was finally knocked out of the 2017 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Bahamas by Iran, as Senegal, already through to the quarter-finals as at Day 2 matches on 29 April, fell to the second spot in the final table of Group A.

In their Day 3 matches on Monday, both African teams were beaten by slim margins (penalty shootouts), but Nigeria's loss (4-4 at full time and 1-2 on penalties) in Group B meant exiting the competition with the 2 points it earned on Saturday by beating Mexico after extra time.

And in a match that didn't matter so much as both teams had already progressed to the knockout stage, Switzerland drew 6-6 with Senegal but snatched Group A leadership from Senegal after overcoming the African champions 3-1 during the shootout.

In other results on Monday, host nation Bahamas earned its first victory, a 4-1 win over Ecuador in Group A, while Italy hammered Mexico 8-1 in Group B. Bahamas, Ecuador and Mexico failed to qualify.

In the quarter-finals on 4 May, Switzerland will meet Iran while Italy takes on Senegal.
