2016 Olympic Games: AU greets African teams competing in Rio Olympics

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) – Expressing optimism that all African teams taking part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will return with as many medals as possible, African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has encouraged competitors to display best sportsmanship.

In a message issued in Addis Ababa on Thursday to wish the teams good luck, Dlamini Zuma also reaffirmed the need to exercise full caution during the Olympic Games so that the tournament will kick off and progress without disruption.

Underlining the fact that the African Union continues to display its Olympic spirit through the African Games, she said the Games “are an opportunity for the continent’s athletes to express their potential”.

The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and commonly known as Rio 2016, are a major international multi-sport event in the tradition of the Olympic Games as governed by the International Olympic Committee.

Opening rounds in certain events began on 3 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro —two days before the opening ceremony - and the Games will formally run from 5 August to 21 August 2016.
