2015 FIFA WWC: England beats Germany 1-0 for 3rd place, as USA meets Japan in final match Sunday

Edmonton, Canada (PANA) - England on Saturday outlasted two-time champion Germany (winners in 2003 and 2007) in extra time to secure third-place at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada, thanks to a Fara Williams strike from the penalty spot in the 18th minute of the 30-minute extra time.

According to the FIFA media outlet, it was a first-ever win for England, quarter-finalist in 1995, 2007 and 2011, over Germany in 21 attempts.

The German record also includes a runner-up silver medal in 1995 and a fourth-place finishing in 1991, while England enter the record books with their third-place finishing here.

In the final match Sunday in Vancouver, defending champion Japan will take on two-time winner USA (1991 and 1999).
