2015 FIFA Beach Soccer WC: Tahiti beats Italy, qualifies for final

Espinho, Portugal (PANA) - Tahiti, the first Pacific nation to qualify for the knockout stage in the history of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup (in 2013), on Saturday qualified for the final of the 2015 edition of the competition.

In their semi-final encounter here, Tahiti, which finished fourth in 2013, defeated the more experienced Italy 3-1 in a penalty shootout after both sides had drawn 6-6 in normal and extra times.

The Italians, silver medallists in 2008, bronze medallists in 1996, and two-time fourth-place finishers (1995 and 2004), will now settle for third place in a match against the losers of the second semi-finals being played about now between hosts Portugal and Russia -- both are former winners of the title - Russia twice in 2011 and 2013, and Portugal once way back in 2001.
